The passage of time happens primarily in the spaces between entries in this verse novel, implying the silences and sheer significance of days Maddie endures with only her dog for company as she reads library books, gathers food, and experiences her first period over the years of solitude. ![]() As the seasons change and she remains alone, however, Maddie begins to come to terms with the fact that she may be on her own much longer than she originally anticipated. She spends the first few weeks waiting for rescue, as surely once each parent realizes she isn't with the other, they'll stop at nothing to get back to her.
